Medicare Facts

When you become eligible for Medicare, you have a 7-month open enrollment period to sign up for Part A and/or Part B. This open enrollment period works in monthly blocks. So in this case, do not think of your birthday as a fixed day within the month but as the whole month. Your open enrollment period begins 3 months prior to your birth month and continues until the end of 3 months after your birth month.
You are eligible to sign up for Part A and/or Part B during the General Enrollment Period that takes place January 1st – March 31st every year if you didn’t sign up when you became eligible at 65 or if you aren’t eligible for a Special Enrollment Period. Additionally, coverage will start on July 1st of that same year.
Health and Drug plans under Medicare can make annual changes pertaining to cost, coverage, and providers or pharmacies within a plan’s network. October 15th – December 7th is when anyone with Medicare can change their Medicare health plan and prescription drug coverage for the following year in order to better meet their health needs.
If you sign up late for Medicare Part B coverage, you will have to pay a late penalty premium each month for the remainder of your life in addition to your Part B premium. Each full 12-month period in which you were eligible for Medicare Part B but did not enroll will increase your Part B premium by 10%. This penalty will be paid as long as you have Part B coverage.

Choosing The Best Medicare Plan

Medicare Part A

Coverage under Medicare Part A includes inpatient hospital stays, hospice care, and specialized nursing care.

Medicare Part B

Coverage under Medicare Part B includes Doctor visits, durable medical equipment, outpatient services, and preventive care.

Medicare Part C

Coverage under a Medicare Advantage Plan combines Part A and Part B to provide both services through a private insurance company.

Medicare Part D

Coverage under a Prescription Drug Plan fills “gaps” in coverage that Medicare Part A and Part B leave open.

Medicare Part F

Coverage under Part F includes coinsurance, deductibles, and excess charges of Part A and Part B with additional benefits.

Medicare Part G

Coverage under a Medigap plan is similar to a Part F plan. However, it does not cover a Part B deductible.
